Leviticus 19:11 KJV
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
Hebrew 9:22 KJV
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
There is power in the blood of Jesus! It’s only by the blood of Jesus that you and I are children of God today! We were bound by sin and in the grasp and power of satan. We had no way back to the father. After the fall, sin had passed upon all mankind. Even if a man would’ve been willing to die for our sins, no man qualified, because no man was innocent. It would take the blood of an innocent, sinless sacrifice to pay the price for our sins.
Leviticus 17:11 (GNB) says, “The life of every living thing is in the blood, and that is why the Lord has commanded that all blood be poured out on the altar to take away the people’s sins. Blood, which is life, takes away sins.” The principle of atonement for sins under the law was a life for a life. Without the shedding of blood there is no remission (pardon, forgiveness). So, when they sinned under the Old Covenant, the blood of an innocent animal was shed on the altar as a sacrifice for their sins. Forgiveness did not come because the penalty of sin was excused, but because it was transferred to a sacrifice whose lifeblood was poured out.
They had to offer sacrifices continually and their sins were only covered, not cleansed. Today, we are celebrating the fact that our debt has been paid. Jesus was our sin offering. He paid our debt by the sacrifice of Himself (Heb 9:28). He became sin so that we might become the righteousness of God (2 Cor 5:21). I am redeemed and forgiven (Eph 1:7). I’ve been justified by his blood (Rom 5:9). I’ve been delivered from the power of satan and translated into the kingdom of God (Col 1:13). Today, I can enter into the very presence of God boldly by the blood of Jesus (Heb 10:19). I have all these benefits, plus many more, because of Jesus! Thank God for the price he paid and the blood he shed! Thank God for the blood!
