Love is Patient

1 Corinthians 13:4 KJV

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

As Christians, we are love children of a love God (1 John 4:8). The first and greatest commandment is to love God and the second is to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40). Without love we have nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).

One of the characteristics of the God kind of love is patience. Love is patient. 1 Corinthians 13:4 says, “Charity (love) suffereth long…” Suffereth long means “to exercise patience, to forbear, or to be long-suffering.” When I am patient, I am not quick to snap at or give up on others. Even when the situation is pressing on me, I will be patient and listen to what God is saying.

One thing that has always helped me with cultivating patience is my recognition of just how patient God has been with me in my development and growth. Romans 15:5 tells us that “God is a God of patience.” God has never given up on me and has put up with some things in my life that were not right in my development process. I’m not saying that He agreed with any wrongs in my life, but He was both patient and merciful while I was in the growing up process.

While it’s wonderful that God is patient, we must remember that He expects us to be patient with others as well. Patience will cause you to put up with some things you don’t like while God is working on others. Patience is not quick to give up on people or throw them away. Patience always gives God time to work in the lives of others.

Remember, patience is not natural. Patience is the result of you abiding in the vine (John 15:1-7) and producing the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Renew your mind with the Word and ask the Holy Spirit to help you become more patient daily. This will have lasting impact and effect on those around you!
