Deuteronomy 5:16 (KJV)
Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
We live in a society where anything goes. There is a complete disregard and disrespect of all authority. People no longer have any hesitation to speak out against those in authority. They not only speak out against authority without hesitation, but they actually celebrate those who “rise up.”
This should not be the case with Christians, but yet we very often see the same things that are going on in the world going on in the lives of Christians. Christians are to live by the word of God, the Bible. We are not to follow the pattern of this world!
As we move into Mother’s Day I want to briefly look at the parent/child relationship from the Bible. Our passage above tells us to “Honour thy father And mother.” The word “honour” means “to respect, obey, and care for.” That is not an option, but a command. It is not only a command, but it is the first command with a promise! The promise is that your life will go well and your days prolonged. I think about this passage very often when I hear how children talk about their parents and how they talk to their parents. If parents understood the ramifications of allowing their children to disrespect them they would not allow it for one second. By allowing them to speak any old kind of way you are setting them up for a life of hardships and possibly a life cut short. That’s not me saying that, it’s the word of God!
While I know my parents weren’t perfect, I’m thankful that they understood this concept and trained me this way!
Remember, the command is to honour (respect, obey, and care for) your father and mother, and the benefit is a long, blessed life!
Happy Mother’s Day!
