Matthew 16:24 KJV
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
One of the greatest enemies in the life of the Christian is self, or selfishness. In our town recently I read a billboard that said, “Love yourself first.” I’ve heard many Christian’s, and even ministers say, “If it matters to you, it matters to God.” These statements are completely unscriptural and will cause you to be unfulfilled and miserable the rest of your life!
The “love yourself first” group has missed the entire point of Christianity! The Bible actually says this mentality in the church is a sign of the last days. 2 Timothy 3:2 says, “For men shall be lovers of their own selves…” As a Christian, what I want and how I feel is not to be top priority in my life. That is exactly opposite of how Jesus lived his life here on the earth and he is our example.
Love gives! Love considers others before itself (Philippians 2:3)! Love always puts what God wants before what I want (Luke 22:42). I see so many Christians who are missing the whole point of Christianity.
If you live your life to please yourself and pursue everything you want in this life, you will never accomplish God’s will. The Christian has come to the end of his life (Luke 5:11). Our text scripture says to follow Christ we must deny ourselves (Matthew 16:24). To deny means to “disown or completely forget.”
If you are going to walk with God, you are going to have to get over yourself! The Gospel is not about me, me, me, but it is all about him! God is looking for those who are yielded to his will to be vessels to help his people and reach this lost and dying world with the gospel!
Don’t be selfish! Put God first, others second, and you can rest assured that God will always take care of you (Matthew 6:33).
