Faith and Joy

Acts 27:25 KJV

Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

I have been in many storms in my life, but I have not had joy in every storm! Usually, things are going along just fine, and then the clouds show up. Things that looked promising now look bleak. The temptation when these storms show up is to retreat and find cover. This might be a natural response, but this is not the response of a man or woman of God in faith!

Paul was in a storm that had the ability to sink the ship and drown them all. It was a very dark hour in his life. The crew had done all they could to save the ship, but it was going down. Acts 27:20 says, “… all hope that we should be saved was taken away.” This storm was speaking loudly that the end was near! Even though Paul had appealed to appear before Caesar it didn’t look like he was going to make it. I’m sure you’ve been in this situation before. God has given you a promise, but it looks further away than ever.

We must see what Paul said in this life-threatening storm. It took me some time to get this revelation. In Acts 27:25 Paul says, “Wherefore, sirs, BE OF GOOD CHEER: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.” Do you see that? Paul and the others lives are at stake and Paul is telling them to cheer up. Really?

In the storms I’ve been in, cheering up was the last thing on my mind! When the storm shows up, you just want to hold on for dear life until it passes. That is not what Paul instructed them to do. How could Paul possibly tell them to cheer up when facing death? We must note that cheer up was not all that Paul said. Paul also said, “For I believe God.” Paul had joy in the storm, not just because he had a promise from God, but because he believed the promise of God!

If you are in a great storm today and you have God’s promise, I encourage you to stand on that word and cheer up! As you hold fast to the word of God, He cannot and will not fail you! You will come out on the other side!
